When visiting DFW Fiber Fest this past week, this vendor’s booth caught my eye. Because they were so busy, I didn’t get the chance to get up close and personal with their merchandise, but I knew I wanted to purchase some for myself.
The brand? The Buffalo Wool Company!
There is so much interest lately in alternative yarn fibers, and bison is definitely one you should consider.
Their website mentions not only the softness, warmth and lightweight qualities so many of us look for. But surprisingly it is also water-wicking, doesn’t shrink like typical wool, and is considered hypo-allergenic (because there are no known allergies to the fiber.)
I purchased a few mini sets, because who doesn’t like minis, am I right? These would be excellent for your smaller projects like Amigurumi patterns, or small children’s wear, or a nice edging or finish to a project.
The Splash sets are 90% superwash merino, 10% bison down and the Sexy sets are 50% bison, 50% Mulberry silk (super soft and shiny!)
In addition to their yarn, you can also find patterns and ready-to-wear products as well. These Buffalo Wool Sexy Mitts would be a great pattern to familiarize yourself with bison fiber — and the pattern is free on their website! 👍👍
I hope you get to explore all the exciting information on their website — in addition to the fiber-friendly pages there is a wealth of information on the history of the American Bison (not Buffalo) and how you can support the Texas Bison Association and/or become a “Friend of the Buffalo”.
I will continue to follow The Buffalo Wool Co. and I hope you will too.
